POWERS & COMPANY LAUNCHES LION’S SHARE, A PHILANTHROPIC PROGRAM ADVANCING HEALTH EQUITY

Initial donation recipients include Sight for Life and Eye Corps, nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving patient care in underserved populations

DANA POINT, Calif., April 3, 2024 – Powers & Company, a healthcare marketing strategy and communications consultancy, announced the formation of its philanthropic program, Lion’s Share, and named two organizations as initial beneficiaries. Through Lion’s Share, Powers & Company will provide strategic donations and volunteer support to organizations committed to fostering equitable access to healthcare, a core value of the firm that was established in March 2023.  Powers & Company will donate 5% of proceeds to these identified recipients working to advance health equity across the globe.  The company’s leadership team has chosen their first gift recipients as Sight for Life and Eye Corps, nonprofit organizations improving eye health in underserved areas of the world.

“We’re grateful to both of these organizations for ensuring that patients with unmet needs have improved access to clinicians and medical services, and it’s an honor for us to support and volunteer with their life-changing work,” said Carey Powers, founder and CEO of Powers & Company. “On day one, we established our company’s commitment to the principle of health equity, and it’s exciting for us to act on that value in our first year in business.”

As one of its founding beneficiaries, Powers & Company selected Sight for Life, a nonprofit organization with the mission to provide the delivery of eye care and to create lasting surgical and clinical solutions in the communities of St. Vincent and the Grenadines through education, collaboration, and improved access to technology, training, equipment, and supplies.

“Sight for Life is thankful to receive support through the Lion’s Share initiative, as their commitment to our organization and donation has allowed us to bring crucial sight-preserving care to areas that lack modern medical services. Their support has been integral in helping us with our new eye hospital serving St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which will open later this year,” said ophthalmologist Cathleen McCabe, M.D. and Sight for Life Lead Volunteer for over 20 years.

Powers & Company will also contribute to Eye Corps, recognizing its commitment to building a sustainable eye care delivery system in Tanzania, where it boosts access to low-cost cataract surgeries, glasses, and vision care by providing supplies and education to practitioners and ophthalmic training institutions. Eye Corps maintains four treatment sites in hospitals in Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro, Lindi, and Ruvuma regions.

“In our short time, Eye Corps has performed over 6,000 surgeries, but what I am most proud of is Eye Corps’ impact on the training of in-country cataract surgeons. We are partnered with the Ministry of Health and the MUHAS residency program where we are providing equipment, mentors and microfinancing opportunities to build practices,” said Susan McDonald, M.D., an ophthalmologist who co-founded Eye Corps in 2017. “We are extremely grateful to pursue this goal with the help of allies like Powers & Company, who understand that the persistence of cataract blindness cannot be justified when a cure is available.”

Hannah Austin and Tatum Hathaway, both Senior Directors of Marketing at Powers & Company, co-lead Lion’s Share by overseeing the company's philanthropic services including volunteer opportunities, potential beneficiaries, and management of partner programs dedicated to health equity.
